The Legend of Zelda for the NES and was first sold February 21st, 1986. The series was founded by none other than Shigeru Miyamoto who also created Super Mario. Given the long history of the series its no surprise that it's sold a cumulative total of more than 50 million games and rising bringing it into the top 5 selling videogame series' of all time.
The main series of games constitutes those core Zelda RPG adventure games set in and around Hyrule, the games and their stories are canon to one another and relate and tie in, whereas the spin off games are entirely standalone and may fall into categories such as hack & slash (Hyrule Warriors) or First person shooters (Link's Crossbow training). Link is the protagonist of the main series games and in the early games moreso than the modern is tasked with rescuing Zelda from the evil Ganon, the main antagonist of the series.
We have a page for every main series Zelda title ever created, simply click it's title screen below to visit it's page; they are arranged chronologically from the very earliest games at the top, to the very newest at the bottom - most people would probably do that the opposite way round, but there was something a lot more magical about those older, original titles ;-)
