Situation: You're coding something, and you notice your start bar is overcrowded. You than think, if only these icons were smaller!
Solution: It's possible! I actually just did it. Look here. (http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd125/ZM11/icond.jpg) Notice the icons are maybe 1/3 the size of the original icons. They're set to 56 pixels at maximum width. How, though? Here's where I give you a warning.
Warning: For those who easily mess-up, or don't feel safe editing/creating files in a location where important files are located, go look at something else. One false move can probably do something bad.
Onto how to do this.
1. Go to your Run function and type in "regedit" (registry editing; this is where some important files are).
2. In your Registry Editing window, on the left pane, find "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics"; this is the area where the computer handles the size of things—like the start bar icons.
3. Find a file name with "MinWidth" (it's a REG_SZ file); if there isn't one, make one name "MinWidth." (Don't add anything else your computer won't use it; and take out the quotes.)
4. After finding/making it, double click it. A new window should appear. In the new window, type "56" into the "Value data" textbox (http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd125/ZM11/icond-1.jpg). Then click that "OK" button.
5. Save and exit anything you're working on, and restart your computer. I recommend restarting the correct way (not pressing the power button on the front of your computer).
If you did all of this correctly, your Start Bar icons should look smaller. In Vista, it probably needs a bit smaller size to rid of the text, so test on that. Also, if you need pictures, I can do that. And if you have trouble doing something, the reply button is there for that. ;)
Hm.... If you want me to do more of these little things, tell me.
